Overview

Palpitations are an uncomfortable awareness of the heartbeat, described as fluttering, pounding, racing, or skipping beats. May be benign or indicate ventricular or supraventricular dysrhythmias.

Possible Causes

  • Premature Ventricular Contractions (PVCs) / PACs
  • Atrial Fibrillation or Atrial Flutter
  • Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT)
  • Thyrotoxicosis (hyperthyroidism)
  • Excess caffeine, nicotine, stimulant medications, severe anxiety
  • Electrolyte abnormalities (hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia)

When to Seek Care

Seek immediate medical care if palpitations cause fainting, dizziness, or chest pain. Schedule an elective cardiology visit for Holter monitor tracking if episodes occur frequently.
